{"id":9050,"date":"2011-04-13T12:51:00","date_gmt":"2011-04-13T16:51:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-08-13T18:34:17","modified_gmt":"2020-08-13T22:34:17","slug":"crocus-vernus-even-ordinary-can-be","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gardern.co.za\/2011\/04\/crocus-vernus-even-ordinary-can-be\/","title":{"rendered":"Crocus vernus, even ordinary can be beautiful"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" trbidi=\"on\">\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gardern.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/crocus11.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" style=\"cursor: move;\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">I adore species crocus, (what true gardener doesn&#8217;t), but I still have a nostalgic spot for the classic giant Dutch crocus, and if planted in drifts and sweeps, they too can make a great impression.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gardern.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/crocus11.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"244\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gardern.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/crocus1.jpg?resize=400%2C244&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"400\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\">A $2.00 border of common giant Dutch crocus, hybrids of Crocus vernus, bloom in our front yard.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\">These are all from close-out sale bulbs from Home Depot that were reduced to pennies for each bag of 50 bulbs. The bulbs always go on sale after mid-November, to make room for Holiday plants, are often a good buy since even if a few grow, is still a great value. These were planted in December because the soil two years ago, was still not frozen.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\">Some bulbs are damaged by storage at indoor temperatures that are warm in the winter, others, not so much. So why not take a chance. Tulips may abort their flowers at high storage temperature, but they may bloom the following year. The Fritillaria below were planted in January ( in flats, in the greenhouse) because my friend forgot to plant them before the snow arrived, and now look at them! I have &nbsp;bag of Narcissus that I still have to plant this spring, that never made it into the ground. They were stored in the cellar where it was cool, and most will still grow, and bloom next year.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gardern.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/spring3.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">Fritillaria meleagris, blooming in a flat. These bulbs were almost tossed into the trash, when they were discovered in January and the ground outside was frozen and covered in snow.
