We delight in their brief display, for these are plants which are notoriously challenging in gardens east of the Rockies.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"266\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gardern.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Penstemon1.jpg?resize=400%2C266&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"400\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">Various hybrid Penstemon ( or Bearded Tongue) bloom in the raised rock wall along the greenhouse. Long lost labels mean little when such precious plants bloom for us in the east, where Penstemon are rare and treasured, for there is nothing most Penstemon hate most, than the hot, humid summers such as those encountered in the eastern United States.<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"302\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gardern.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/penstemon4.jpg?resize=400%2C302&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"400\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">True alpine species of Penstemon are some of the most desirable of alpine plants, but most are ungrowable in humid and wet garden in the eastern US. Here, a <i>Penstemon abietinus<\/i> blooms for us on June 1, in the crevice garden, where it tumbles over the rocks and gravel.<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"280\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gardern.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/penstemon_pinifolius.jpg?resize=400%2C280&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"400\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><br \/>\n<i>Penstemon pinifolius<\/i> survives, only in our rock crevice garden where it grows in a tight crack of granite.
