Definitely better in the ground than in a container, I’ve never had luck growing them in pots – roots are too vigorous. South exposure should be best too, but I would shade the lower part of the plant maybe, as the vines grow through undergrowth in their native ecosystem.

I don’t know for certain, but I had a similar problem. I started sowing in late May and June which seems to be better. Might be a combination of vigor based on day length maybe, and soil moisture/temperature? Will need to research this more, though – only guessing.I also sow in shade, as I have found that seedlings seem to burn quickly – maybe in their native habitat, seed germinate under the cover of foliage from other plants?

I grow it in one most years up a corner post of my deck on the west side. It usually blooms but sometimes not as thick as I’d like. Would a south lattice be better. Would it be best if I made a ground bed for it instead of the pot.

UK gardening guru Sarah Raven has pointed out that as well as being a climber, cobea scandens can be regarded as a cascading plant. I have therefore positioned two plants (grown from seed with no difficulty) in the ‘gully’ outside the third floor window of our London terraced house. The plants are falling over the ledge in great profusion but no buds as yet. Still, lends a jungly vibe to a Queen Anne house to those who bother to look up.
