I know this is a years-old post, but in the intervening years a new (to us) pest has reached us here in Connecticut, the allium leaf miner. Two years in a row I lost hundreds of gorgeous leeks in mid-Autumn; the best fatties I was saving for Winter eating! Seemingly one week they were fine, the next full of little maggots tunnelling from the tips down to the heart. A gut turning experience.

Hopefully you haven’t met this one yet, but just wanted to pop in and suggest to cover your alliums in Summer with insect fleece to keep out the egg-laying flies. I’m covering my garlic too, just in case.

A clove goes in the ground in fall and you pull out a bulb in spring. Doesn't take up much room and you'll have garlic till the next harvest.
