The best pie I ever had in my life of 55 years, and I have had a LOT of pie, was made by my mother's friend, we were visiting their farm and she had a homemade cherry pie with cherries that they had just picked. Now, my Mom made fabulous pies, but always with canned cherry pie filling. So this one made with real cherries and sprinkled with sugar on top of that beautiful lattice top was a work of art! And when I tasted it, I thought that I had died and gone to heaven, it was that good, and I have never eaten before or since , a cherry pie that good.
I had my first canning experience when I was 11, I made blackberry jelly and it was delicious!! It might be a good idea if I won that book, as I do need help in the pickle department, much better at jams and jellies.
Great post and all of the recipes sound fantastic.

All the cherry recipes look amazing. Canning is a lot of work, and I'm sure all that pitting took awhile too. I'm actually part of a local canning swap, which is great. (I'm still working on getting rid of last year's Salsa Verde, which will probably take several years to go through since my tomatillo harvest was so big last year.)

Thanks for the chance to win!

My grandfather made the pies, telling me once that if I swallowed a seed, which of course I accidentally did, that a tree would grow out of my stomach. I spent weeks anxiously waiting for a tree to start poking out of my mouth. Still my favorite pie. Brings back those memories every time.

I love canning–did 12 pints of bread and butter pickles this morning!

Sour cherry pie my favorite. I never used a cherry pitter, just my fingers….goes so much faster, so I don't understand why more people don't just squirt out the pit With their fingers? Also remember reading that an old hairpin works. Whatever…loved seeing your Mom's lists. I want to try the salsa. Thank you!

I made cherry jam on Monday from my Montmorency cherry tree. It is a lot of work, especially the pitting, but is definitely worth it. My parents also canned a lot when I was a child and I remember the big old pressure cooker. Those were the days.

Either way, all of those cherries make me wish I liked cherries. I know, I know…I am not a cherry person! I've made a few jars of blackberry jam and some pineapple-pepper jelly this summer but tomatoes have been a bust due to weather so I'm hoping for a fall crop to can. I've done pressure canning about 7 years ago but have since just stuck with water baths.
