Sarah, I am uncertain as to what species this one is, as I have lost the labels, and all of mine are planted in identical pots. Most likely, it is T. tricolor or T.X Tenuirostre, a newly described interspecific cross. Both grow best for me. T. tuberosum is spending the winter in the garden this year, I am taking a chance to see if it will winter over, as I've been told that it may if planted deep enough in a protect location. check out this other post of mine which shows some of my other species, some tuberous, some not. gardern.co.za/2011/08/bored-with-everyday-nasturtium-hello.html

Hi Matt, Thanks for the answer. I can't find tubers or plants though. I'll keep looking, and meanwhile try the seeds. So what is the species in the picture? I'm interested in other less known Tropaeolum climber species too.

That said, I do need to correct my post, as I have not grown T. speciosum *(yet). I don't know what I was thinking when I was tapping away on my laptop – may on my second glass of wine – but I have grown most of the other tuberous species well. There have been moreI later find them germinating in other pots randomly, here and there! So who knows. I guess I have not answered your question well enough, but I can advise you to simply buy dormant tubers, they are easier to deal with.

I recently discovered your blog and am enjoying it thoroughly. Thanks!

I am going to be getting some seeds of Tropaeolum speciosum soon. People seem to have a lot of difficulty germinating it. How did you do it?

It is hardy here in Seattle. Last summer I saw some climbing all over a Thuya hedge and it was stunning!

thanks,

Sarah
